Soul Asylum was an outgrowth of a previous company, Ostentatious Secured Rules, formed in 1981 nearby guitarist and chorister Dave Pirner, guitarist and backing chorus-member Dan Murphy, bassist Karl Mueller, and drummer Praise Morley.
